Site Quality Protocols for Reinforcing Steel
Rebar is the tensile backbone of any reinforced concrete structure. Under Ethiopian Standard ES ISO 6935-2, all structural rebar intended for earthquake-resistant design must meet strict yield stress and ductility elongation thresholds.
Key Physical Verification Checks
- Mill Markings: Inspect the embossed rolling marks on the bar surface. Reputable manufacturers stamp their brand mark, diameter (e.g., 16), and strength grade (60 or TMT) every meter.
- Rib Profile Uniformity: Consistent transverse rib height and spacing are necessary to ensure mechanical bond strength with the concrete matrix.
- Cold Bend Test: Bend a 180-degree test piece around a mandrel on site. Authentic Grade 60 rebar will show zero micro-cracks or delamination along the outer tensile bend curve.
