1. Understanding Rebar Strength Grades under Ethiopian Standards
In accordance with the Ethiopian Standard Agency specification (ES ISO 6935-2) and international benchmarks (ASTM A615 / BS 4449), reinforcing steel is categorized by yield stress and ductility elongation thresholds:
- Grade 40 (Yield Strength ≥ 280 MPa): Suitable for non-structural blinding concrete, secondary ground slabs, and low-stress perimeter fence foundations.
- Grade 60 (Yield Strength ≥ 420 MPa): The standard specification for commercial building columns, suspended floor slabs, and retaining walls throughout Addis Ababa.
- Grade 75 / 500 TMT (Yield Strength ≥ 500 MPa): Thermo-mechanically treated high-ductility bars designed specifically for high-rise frames and earthquake-resistant seismic zones in the Ethiopian Rift Valley.
2. The Essential On-Site Physical Quality Verification Checklist
Before allowing any rebar delivery truck to unload at your construction site, structural supervisors must perform four crucial quality checks:
- Mill Rolling Marks: Examine the longitudinal bar surface for embossed manufacturer symbols, nominal diameter (e.g., 16mm, 20mm), and strength classification stamped every meter.
- Unit Weight Verification: Cut a 1.0-meter sample and calculate its nominal weight using the standard engineering formula:
Weight (kg/m) = Diameter² / 162.2. Certified steel must fall within ±4% to ±6% of the theoretical weight. Counterfeit or undersized scrap rebar often shows a deficit of 12% to 18%, severely compromising structural load capacity. - 180° Cold Bend & Rebend Inspection: Bend a test specimen around a mandrel without heating. Authentic Grade 60 rebar will show zero micro-fissures or surface delamination along the outer tensile bend curve.
- Distinguishing Surface Rust from Structural Pitting: Light reddish-brown rust actually increases bond friction with wet concrete. However, if rust flakes off in scale-like layers leaving black pitting cavities on the base metal, the bar must be rejected.
3. Weather Protection & Storage Protocols During Kiremt
Addis Ababa's intense summer rains can accelerate destructive corrosion if steel stockpiles are left in contact with soil moisture. Store all bundles on elevated timber blocks at least 25 cm above ground level with a 2% drainage slope, and cover stockpiles with ventilated, breathable waterproof tarpaulins.
